Layer Every Corner with Thoughtful Interior Concepts

12 September 2026  ·  By June Marrow

Walk into a room that feels instantly right and you are standing in layers. Not clutter — layers. A calm base, a working middle and a personal top, each doing a different job. When clients ask why our rooms photograph well but live even better, layering is always the answer.

Start with light, not paint

The first layer is invisible: daylight paths and evening lighting scenes. We map where sun lands at breakfast and where you will read at ten at night, then place circuits before colour. A perfectly painted room with one overhead light will always feel flat; a simply finished room with five warm pools of light feels designed.

Then texture at three heights

Feet, hands, eyes — every room should answer all three. A rugged rug underfoot, boucle or leather at hand height, and something with movement at eye level: art, planting, open shelving with breathing room. If a corner feels dead, it is almost always missing one of the three.

"Decorate last and least. If the light and the textures are right, you need half the objects you think you do."

Finish with the personal five percent

The final layer is yours: the market find, the inherited chair, the print from a trip that actually means something. Our styling days always end by removing one thing and adding one of yours. That five percent is what turns a scheme into a home — and it is the only part no designer can supply for you.
